After another diversion through woodland, the path descended to meet the current shoreline and beach at Dunwich. Besides a large main pond, there are several channels with landings marked with names of the Peter Pan theme. Wonderfully quiet. The trail skirted through the edge of the woodland before crossing part of Aldringham Common, another stretch of the spectacular Suffolk heathland. This path leads to a junction of paths. It was a spectacular walk in the sunshine, with the blue sky contrasting beautifully with the muted browns and greens of the heath. There is ample parking space but car sharing would be good. From the Beach Cafe cross onto the beach area and then turn right to travel south along the Suffolk Coastal Path. The road ended at a T-junction, where a wide road took me past the main entrance to the Sizewell power stations. The beach walk to Thorpeness will take you past Maggi Hambling's stainless-steel Scallop, a memorial to Benjamin Britten, who lived in Aldeburgh for the last 30 years of his life and founded the Aldeburgh Festival. A magnet for dog walkers, cyclists and strollers, the trails left in the wake of Beeching's axe are sheltered and safe, with nothing more taxing than gentle inclines. When a track crosses the road at TM462604 turn right to follow the road northwards for a couple of hundred yards until a footpath leads off to the right at TM461606, following a track. Aldeburgh itself offers a brilliant dog walking trail that takes you down towards Thorpeness, allowing you to sample some of the best of the local wildlife scenes and pebbled beaches. Turn right along this road and follow it east-northeastwards, passing the Vulcan Arms on the right. The Vulcan public house in Sizewell or the Beach Cafe in the Sizewell car park make excellent half way refreshment stops, whilst the Dolphin public house serves good meals and has a large beer garden. A few hundred yards after entering the woodland turn right along a footpath that heads in a rough easterly direction through the trees, eventually leaving them to cross a stream and enter Dunwich Heath. Turn right to head westwards through the trees until it reaches a bend in a road at TM473700.
